I Quit the Habit, Not the Hardware

Phone addiction is the condition of the moment. Everyone has it.

You can throw the device away, but then you downgrade yourself. You block access to things that actually work, and you make life harder for no real gain.

Some people carry sensors that talk to their phone. A CGM sensor on the arm, glucose numbers on the screen. Some live far from their family and the phone is the only line back. Going flip phone is going backward. That is not the answer.

None of that justifies how much we use it. None of it justifies the hooks.

Detox does not work either. You go clean for a week, then you come back and use it more than before. I ran all the tricks. Grayscale screen. App limits. Empty home screen. They buy you a few days.

What changed this time is simple. I am done.

Same feeling I had in 2019 when I quit social media. Not a plan, not a challenge, not a streak. A decision.

This year the decision was about how I use the phone, not whether I own one. I worked on it constantly because it was there. Accessible. Which meant I was in working mindset every waking hour. Work does not end when the laptop closes if the work fits in your pocket.

I have said this before. This time it feels different. The phone sits on my desk and I look at it with no appetite. Nothing pulls.

What made the difference is attention. Being conscious of where it goes, deliberately, all day. That is the best thing you can do for yourself. Focus on one task. Live it fully. Not half your mind on the work and the other half digesting what is happening on the screen in the background.

I still use blocking tools on the iPhone. They add friction. They do not lock me out. The lock has to come from me, otherwise I just find the way around it.

The other change is in how I handle ideas. I used to execute first and decide later. That built knowledge fast, and it built experience I still use. It also burned attention on things that did not deserve it.

Now I let an idea sit before I build it. Cognitive load is a real budget. With everything happening right now, you have to be selective about what you consume, and more selective about what you let occupy your head.

The battle continues. The difference is that I am no longer fighting the device. I am protecting my attention, and the phone is just one of the things trying to take it.
